Hemispheres is Lily Afshar’s fourth and most ambitious recording to date. In her search for new music, Lily discovered a wonderful array of composers, some of whom have written compositions especially for her. The result is Hemispheres, an intriguing collection of pieces performed by Afshar and written or arranged by international composers including Reza Vali, Ricardo Moyano, Gerard Drozd, Carlo Domeniconi, John Schneider, Leo Brouwer, Garry Eister and Morteza Neydavood. Lily Afshar’s Hemispheres presents a truly original sound (including the incorporation of quarter tones) that promises to be a significant addition to the contemporary classical guitar repertory.

Lily Afshar released 24 Caprichos de Goya, as well as publishing her three-part article in Guitar Review Magazine (GR 79-81), where she combined the music of Castelnuovo-Tedesco with a series of etchings by the Spanish painter Francisco Goya; the inspiration for the compositions.

The DVD features Lily’s soulful interpretation of Koyunbaba, Op. 15 with her mini-cadenza in the final movement, the seldom-heard Turkish folk tune, Kara Toprak Black Earth, her arrangements of the well-known Five Popular Persian Ballads, Gozaar, music by the Iranian composer Reza Vali, based on the traditional Persian scale system of Nava using micro-tones, and three selections from Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s virtuosic masterpieces 24 Caprichos de Goya, Op. 195. Lily shows Goya’s etchings and gives commentaries on the relationship between the artistic works and the musical pieces. Lily talks about her life and her musical journey. Viewers can see Lily’s photo album from childhood to the pesent. This DVD is a rare addition to any musical collection, beneficial to students, professionals and the general public.
